Mrs. Bella Phillips Johnston, widow of the late John E. Johnston, died at her home, 132 East King street, on Tuesday morning at 3:20 o'clock, of a complication o f diseases that had their inception from a stroke of paralysis, sustained three years ago, since when she had been an invalid. She was aged 74 years and 4 months.
Mrs. Johnston was born in Washington, D.C., and spent her early days in that city. When about 15 years old she came to Shippensburg and a few years later married Mr. Johnston, since when she had resided here. Her ancestors were among the first settlers in this locality. Her grandfather, James Colwell, erected the first mill in this section of the county, what is now known as the Riggs mill, northwest of town.
Mrs. Johnston was a member of the Presbyterian church and a devout christian, possessing many admirable traits of character for which she was much loved and esteemed.
She is survived by two daughters: Mrs. S.S. Wilkins, of Bird's Nest, Va., and Mrs. C. W. Holland, of Eastvillle, Va., and one son, Geo. E. Johnston, of Grass Valley, Ca.
The funeral was held this morning at 10:30 o'clock. The services were conducted by her pastor, the Rev. J. D. Lindsay, and her former pastor, the Rev. C. O. Bosserman, now of Cape May. Interment was made in Spring Hill cemetery.
