  [S1] Newspaper Clipping, 20 Sep 1985, Daily Local News (West Chester, PA). John R. Bingaman, 94, of Harrison House, Coatesvile, died at home Thursday following a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Mary Reynolds Bingaman. A former West Chester resident, Mr. Bingaman was born in Coventryville, and was a son of the late George C. and Hannah Simpson Bingaman. He attended school in the Coventryville area. Mr. Bingaman entered the U.S. Navy in 1909, serving for four years, during which time he held the Navy swimming championship for all four years. He was the first man to swim the length of te Panama Canal, swimming the 51 mile length in 1914. He had been employed for five years at the canal and later operated the Bingaman Motor Express Co. for 25 years in Reading, a silk products hauling firm. He was a member and first president of both the Pennsylvania and the National Motor Truckers Associations. He was a memberof High Street Meeting, West Chester. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, John R., Jr., of Laguna Niguel, Calif; one daughter, Elizabeth B. Davis, of West Chester; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be private.
