Melvin Campbell Sr. Dies: Headed Chain Company
Melvin H. Campbell, Sr., 67, retired president of Campbell Chain Co. died Saturday at noon at York Hospital He resided with his wife, Mrs. Ellen Eyeter Campbell, at York RD 6.
Mr. Campbell was born in Philadelphia, a son of the late George J. and Nellie Brear Campbell. He cgraduated from the Charter School of Philadelphia and teh University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Campbell was a past president of teh board of trustees of York College of Pennsylvania and held an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from the college. He was also past president of York YMCA, a member of the board of Historic York, Inc. and a member of York Friends Meeting House Restoriation Association of York County. Mr. Campbell was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
He served on teh Girls' Club Advisory Board of York Recreation Commission, was a member of the Bicentennial Commission of Pennsylvania and was a past campaign chairman of teh United Way of York County.
Mr. Campbell's business associations included presidencies of the American Hardware Manufacturers; Association. Eastern Hardware Association and the Hardware Golf Association. He was a member of Southern Hardware Association and was a member and recipient of the Man-Of-The-Year Award of the Mid-Atlantic Hardware Association.
Mr. Campbell also held memberships in the Lafayette Club, County Club of York, the Union League of Philadelphia and Laurel Fish & Game Club.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Melvin H. Campbell, Jr., York RD 7; a daughter, Mrs. Thomas Lloyd, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia; three grandchildren; two brothers, George J. Campbell, Jr., York RD 8, and Howard D. Campbell, Smallbrook Lane, and a sister, Mrs. William T. Hunt, Wynnewood, Montgomery County.
His pastor, the Rev. John J. Galloway, will officiate at the funeral Tuesday at 10 a.m. from John Colvin Memorial Chapel of First Presbyterian Church. Private burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
