  	History of a Medal Ann Odd Incident in Which Kennett Square Has A Part P. H. Bratton, of this borough, a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, who entered the nation's service in his early teens and served over three years in the 51st Pa. Vols as a fifer, recently received a medal that had been awarded to a relative under very interesting circumstance, writes our Kennett Square Correspondent. A certain George W. Eiler, of Pottsville, who was in possession of the medal of honor awarded to G. W. Bratton, a brother of our citizen, was on the search of Philip H. Bratton, asn had been looking for him at Milton, his former home, and was Directed to Kennett Square. Eiler wrote Mr. Bratton that idf he would go before a Magistrate and make affidavit of his identity he should have hisbrother's medal. Mr. Bratton wrote to Mr. Eiler informing him that there was no doubt of his own personality, as he had been at one time a resident of Pottsville, had gone to school with him, named their neighbors and friends and gave other evidence of his identity. Forthwith came a letter from Mr. Eiler with Bratton's dead brother's medal and an old likeness of himself taken in 1862 i his army uniform. The likeness and medal are precious souvenirs to Mr. Bratton who displays them with much pride to his friends.

  [S1] Newspaper Clipping, 9 Aug 1911, Daily Local News. Philip H. Bratton Death has removed a well-known business man and esteemed citizen of Kennett Square, Philip H. Bratton, wfter an illness of nearly six months. He had been in poor helath for a year, but was taken gravely ill in February and from that time had been confined to his room. He died August 9, 1911, after several days intense suffering. The deceased was the son of Orbert P. and Jane (Housel) Bratton of Milton, Pennsylvania, where he was born in November 1845 and spent his early life . At the outbreak of the Rebellion, being but 16 years of age, he joined Company G, the 51st Penna. Regt., as a fifer and served under the distinguished General Hartranft for over three years, acting during a greater part of the time as that officer's clerk. He asaw the sharpest of the conflict during his life as a soldier, his regiment being with Grant in the memorable engagements at South Mountain, Antietma, Fredericksburg, Vicksburg, Spottsylvania, Petersburg and other desperate encounters. He was transferred from Company G to Company K in 1864 and mustered out in April of that year. He learned the trade of jeweler and watchmaker, conducting a fine business in his native town of Milton until fire swept away his possessions when he went with his family to Anaconda, Montana. They came to Kennett Square twenty-four years ago and have been identified with the life of that town since that time. Mr. Bratton married Miss Mary Stager, of Danville, whom he had known from her 14th year. She, with one daughter, Eleanor, wife of Fr. Frese, of Philadelphia, survive. Mr. Bratton was a man of most attractive, social characteristics, an entertaining and witty talker, possessing a store of thrilling incidents of his career in the great civil conflict which he told with charming effect. He made no pretense, however, to honer or preferment and was one of the most modest of men. He was a member of the G.A.R. Post in his home town and joined the organization of Post No. 24 after he moved to Kennett Square, although he took no active part in its demonstations, He was also a member of Kennett Lodge, No. 475, F. & A. M., and of Kennett Chpater.
